Orlando in the 1800s<\/h2>\n

Orlando\u2019s modern history dates back to 1838 and the Second Seminole War. The U.S. Army built Fort Gatlin, and a small town named Jernigan formed around it. Just six years later, Jernigan became Orlando. Ask the locals and you\u2019ll find there\u2019s no one explanation of the change. Some trace it back to army sentry Orlando Reeves, others a man named Mr. Orlando traveling en route to Tampa, and still others the Shakespeare character Orlando in \u201cAs You Like It,\u201d and a few other theories. The town and post office changed its name to Orlando in 1857. The Town of Orlando was incorporated in 1875 with 85 residents, only 22 of whom were qualified voters.<\/p>\n

From 1875-1895, Orlando was the center of the state\u2019s citrus industry. Unfortunately, the \u201cGreat Freeze\u201d of 1894-95 forced small grove owners to give up their groves to larger companies. Orlando is now a major player in the Florida citrus scene once again.<\/p>\n

World War II<\/h2>\n

When the U.S. entered the war, the original municipal airport north of Lake Underhill was quickly converted into Orlando Army Air Base, with a new municipal airport constructed ten miles south of Orlando. That airport quickly became Pinecastle Air Force Base, then McCoy Air Force Base and is today\u2019s Orlando International Airport. Many of the military families stayed to settle after the war.<\/p>\n

Theme Parks<\/h2>\n

When Walt Disney decided to set his sights on Florida for his theme park, he had several options.
